The government of the Maldives, under the directive of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, had declared an extended public holiday for the entire week of Eid al-Fitr.
A statement issued by the President's Office confirmed that, should the Ministry of Islamic Affairs announce Shawwal 1 on March 31, 2025, the government holidays would span from March 31 to April 3, 2025.
In the event that Eid al-Fitr fell on March 30, the government holidays would have been shifted to March 30, 31, and April 1. The president ensured that the Eid holidays would last until April 3, regardless of the official date of Eid, to provide employees with uninterrupted time to celebrate and spend time with their families.
Muizzu had emphasised that the break would be followed by Friday and Saturday, with government offices reopening on April 6, 2025. This move was designed to allow citizens an extended period for religious observance and familial gatherings during the holy festival.
Additionally, the government had decided to close from March 20 onwards for the last 10 days of Ramadan. This decision was made in line with the President’s annual policy of granting this time off for the promotion of Islamic practices and giving the public the chance to focus on religious duties.
President Muizzu had also noted that despite the holidays, government agencies were instructed to maintain essential services during the break.
