The Vatican on Sunday released the first image of Pope Francis in hospital since he was admitted for treatment of double pneumonia earlier this month.
The 88-year-old pontiff was taken to Rome's Gemelli Hospital on February 14 with a severe respiratory infection, prompting concerns about his health. Since then, he has remained under medical care, with the Vatican providing updates on his condition.
In the newly released photograph, Pope Francis is seen seated in a hospital chapel, facing away from the camera, after celebrating Mass with other priests. The Holy See Press Office stated that he had concelebrated the Eucharist on Sunday morning.
Although the pope has been receiving oxygen as part of his treatment, the image suggests that he is now breathing on his own. However, he has yet to make any public appearances since his hospitalisation.
This is not the first time Pope Francis has faced health challenges in recent years. He has struggled with various medical issues, including knee problems that have limited his mobility. Despite his frail health, he has continued to maintain a busy schedule, leading major Church events and addressing global concerns.
There has been no official confirmation on when the pope will be discharged, but Vatican officials have assured that he is under close medical supervision.
