The government has announced a reduction in the average electricity tariff by Rs7.41 per unit in a significant relief for domestic consumers, bringing it down from Rs45.05 to Rs37.64 per unit, according to official documents.

However, lifeline consumers using up to 50 units will not benefit from this reduction, as their average bill will remain Rs239.

For other domestic consumers:

• 51 to 100 units: Bill remains at Rs937.
• 1 to 100 units (non-protected): Bill reduced from Rs1,467 to Rs852.
• Up to 200 units: Bill decreased from Rs3,530 to Rs2,302.
• 300 units: New bill set at Rs10,209, down from Rs12,378.
• More than 400 units: Bill reduced from Rs22,280 to Rs19,384.

Tariff reductions across various categories

The reduction in electricity prices will benefit commercial, general services, and industrial consumers, making electricity more affordable across multiple sectors. 

• Commercial consumers will see a reduction of Rs8.58 per unit, with the tariff dropping from Rs71.6 to Rs62.47 per unit. For example, a commercial consumer using 1,000 units will now pay Rs62,470 instead of Rs71,000.

• General services consumers will get relief of Rs7.18 per unit, lowering the price from Rs56.66 to Rs49.48 per unit. A general services consumer using 1,500 units will now pay Rs72,735 instead of Rs84,990.
  
  Meanwhile, the agricultural consumers consuming 1,600 units, the bill is reduced from Rs66,816 to Rs55,328.

• Industrial consumers will benefit from a Rs7.69 per unit reduction, with the tariff now set at Rs40.51 per unit, down from Rs48.19. An industrial consumer using 1,200 units will now pay Rs48,612 instead of Rs57,828.

This move is part of the government’s effort to ease the financial burden on businesses and industries, making energy costs more competitive.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, earlier on Thursday, announced a major government initiative to reduce electricity prices. The announcement was made during a special ceremony in Islamabad, attended by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, federal ministers, and key officials. 

During his address, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said the electricity price for domestic consumers was Rs48.70, while this year, electricity price for domestic consumers had been reduced by Rs3.50. He then announced that the electricity price for domestic consumers was being reduced by Rs7 and that all domestic consumers would get electricity at Rs34 per unit. 

Moreover, the PM stated that the price of electricity per unit for industry was Rs58.50, and by now, that price had reached Rs48 with a decrease of Rs10. He then announced a reduction of Rs7.59 per unit for industry. 

Shehbaz further lamented that those who brought Pakistan to the verge of default were celebrating and were sure no one could save Pakistan from default, no matter what.  "Efforts were made day and night to save the country from default, but obstacles were created. The previous government even pulled out of its own agreement with the IMF, and the state was taken to a point it had never gone to before," he added. 

However, he went on to say, Pakistan was saved from bankruptcy, and all the hard work paid off; the economy was on its way to prosperity.
