Unidentified gunmen opened fire on a polio vaccination team in the Teri area of Mastung, killing two security personnel assigned to protect the team, officials confirmed.
One Levies officer was initially injured in the attack but later succumbed to his wounds, raising the death toll to two. Both martyrs were deployed to ensure the safety of the polio workers.
Following the incident, the polio vaccination campaign in the district has been suspended indefinitely. Assistant Deputy Commissioner Manan Tareen stated that the drive has been postponed for an unspecified duration due to security concerns.
Further investigations are underway, and law enforcement has launched a search operation in the area to trace the attackers.
Another Polio Case Confirmed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Tally Rises to Two
Peshawar: Another case of polio has been confirmed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as an 11-year-old boy from the Torghar district has tested positive for the virus, according to the provincial health department.
The National Institute of Health’s Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio has confirmed the presence of the virus in the child.
This is the second polio case reported in the province this year. The first case of 2025 was detected in January in Dera Ismail Khan, health officials said.
Authorities have emphasized the need for continued public cooperation and improvements in vaccination campaigns to eradicate the virus completely.
PM Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemns terrorist attack
Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has strong condemned terrorist attack on Anti-Polio team in Mastung.
In a statement, he expressed deep sorrow over the martyrdom of Levies personnel assigned to the security of the team.
Shehbaz Sharif said terrorists who harm the lives and properties of innocent people are enemies of humanity and will be brought to justice.
He said such incidents cannot deter the government's unwavering commitment to eradicating polio from the country.
He said the public must not lose hope and they should protect their children’s future by ensuring they receive polio drops.
Shehbaz Sharif affirmed that the anti-polio campaign will continue determination.
