The International Cricket Council (ICC) has immediately suspended the membership of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) due to government interference, as announced by the sport's governing body on Friday.
Following Sri Lanka's subpar performance at this year's World Cup, the country's ministry of sport ousted SLC's board and appointed an interim committee. However, Sri Lanka's Court of Appeal intervened, putting a hold on the dismissal.
"The ICC Board met today and determined that Sri Lanka Cricket is in serious breach of its obligations as a Member," the statement read, emphasising the need for autonomous management and the prevention of government interference in cricket governance.
The specific terms of the suspension will be deliberated by the ICC Board in the coming days.
Sri Lanka's World Cup struggles, winning only two out of nine games and ranking ninth among the 10 teams, likely contributed to the decision.
