Punjab government has sought assistance from China to tackle the smog crisis in Lahore as Air Quality Index (AQI) in various parts of the city has surged beyond 300, marking hazardous levels.
As a result, the government has announced a partial lockdown in 10 districts to curb the escalating pollution. The provincial capital continues to cope with severe smog, earning the dubious distinction of being the second most polluted city globally.
The spike in atmospheric pollution has led to a surge in respiratory and throat-related illnesses.
Over the past 24 hours, a staggering 3,242 individuals sought medical attention in government hospitals.
Health Minister Dr. Jamal Naseer said,” We are witnessing a concerning rise in respiratory illnesses due to air pollution. I appeal to the citizens to take necessary precautions and adhere to safety measures to protect themselves."
Punjab government has enlisted support from Chinese environmental experts. A delegation is expected to visit Punjab soon to assess the situation and propose effective measures.
Lahore Development Authority (LDA) is taking innovative steps to combat smog by introducing water spraying measures. This initiative aims to mitigate air pollution and improve the overall air quality in the region.
Educational institutions in Lahore and 10 other districts will remain closed, while markets will be allowed to operate only after 3:00 PM.
