In a move aimed at reducing costs and fostering sustainability, Pakistan Railways has unveiled an ambitious plan to transition its power network to solar systems across its extensive network of stations, offices, workshops, and factories.
According to officials within the Ministry of Railways, the first phase of this eco-friendly transformation is anticipated to generate savings of approximately Rs1.8 billion for the department.
This initial phase will encompass 99 formations, encompassing major railway stations, nine divisional headquarters, and critical offices.
To execute this monumental project, Pakistan Railways is set to enlist the expertise of the National Engineering Services Pakistan (NESPAK), a renowned entity in the field of engineering and infrastructure development. Their partnership is expected to facilitate the seamless transition of Pakistan Railways to solar energy.
The decision to embrace solar power comes as a strategic response to alleviate the financial strain on Pakistan Railways, which has grappled with economic challenges. By harnessing solar energy, the department aims to significantly reduce its energy expenditure.
In addition to this green initiative, Pakistan Railways is also taking measures to cope with the ongoing energy crisis and soaring utility bills. In an effort to conserve energy and optimize resource use, the railway management has implemented a policy prohibiting the use of air conditioning by its officers before 11 am daily.
Caretaker Minister for Energy and Petroleum, Muhammad Ali, has expressed the government's unwavering commitment to supporting solar net metering, emphasizing the importance of sustainable energy solutions.
He further disclosed that the government is working on introducing a special tariff for electricity users in industries before October 31, 2023, in a bid to alleviate their financial burden.
Furthermore, the government is actively developing a specialized tariff structure for the winter season, seeking to provide relief to energy consumers. In the fight against power theft, the government has initiated stringent measures and actions to deter and penalize those involved in electricity theft.
Pakistan Railways' transformative shift towards solar energy not only positions the department as an environmental steward but also promises significant fiscal benefits, reflecting a broader trend towards sustainability and efficiency in the country's infrastructure development efforts.
