Lahore police have apprehended a mother-son pair, Safia and Shoaib, for their involvement in an illicit kidney trade racket that spanned a decade.
Operating from the Raiwind area, the accused preyed on impoverished and uneducated individuals, exploiting their desperation for financial gain.
SP Cant Owais Shafiq revealed that the arrested duo were integral members of the notorious Dr. Fawad Mumtaz gang, which is infamous for extracting and selling kidneys for a meagre Rs0.3 million (approximately $1,000).
The police investigation uncovered Safia and Shoaib's crucial role in the gang's operations, facilitating the extraction and sale of kidneys from at least 24 individuals.
The arrest of Safia and Shoaib came to light after a complaint filed by Naeem, a victim who had undergone kidney extraction a year ago but never received any compensation.
Seeking justice, the victim approached the police, triggering an investigation that unravelled the illegal kidney trade network.
Police authorities have assured that the investigation is ongoing and that further arrests are anticipated as they dismantle Dr. Fawad Mumtaz gang.
