Erum Ghafoor has been elected as the first Pakistani vice president of the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). The election took place during the World Diabetes Congress 2025, held in Bangkok, Thailand, marking the 75th anniversary of the global organization.
Ghafoor clinched the position after securing 112 votes in a highly competitive election that saw participation from over 270 diabetes associations across the world. Her election not only highlights Pakistan’s growing role in global health leadership but also signifies a milestone in the country’s 33-year collaboration with the IDF.
This historic victory follows in the footsteps of the late Dr. Abdul Samad Shera, another prominent Pakistani, who was previously honoured as the honorary president of the federation.
Health experts, diabetes advocates, and medical communities across Pakistan have hailed Erum Ghafoor’s success as a proud achievement for the country.
The IDF, a global alliance of more than 240 diabetes organizations from over 160 countries, plays a critical role in promoting diabetes awareness, research, and advocacy worldwide.
