The federal government has constituted a cabinet committee to investigate the incidents of May 9, 2023, when public and private property was attacked, vandalised, and set ablaze by hundreds of violent PTI supporters.
The PTI leadership and supporters marched on streets across Pakistan, vandalising several army installations, including the Corps Commander House in Lahore and GHQ Rawalpindi main gate, among many others.
On the instructions of caretaker Prime Minister Anwarul Haq Kakar, the notification for the formation of a five-member committee was issued on Saturday. The cabinet committee will be headed by caretaker Law Minister Ahmed Irfan Aslam.
Members of the committee include ministers of interior, information, and human rights. The committee has been mandated to review the events of May 9, 2023, as per the notification.
The committee will determine the masterminds, planners, and facilitators of the May 9 events. It will also determine the reasons behind the mayhem of the day and those responsible for it. The committee will eventually offer suggestions to avoid such incidents in the future.
The formation of the committee comes in the wake of videos of the violence, perpetrated by the PTI leaders and workers on May 9, 2023, coming to the fore and serving as proof of the involvement of those being accused of it.
