Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has threatened to end Turkey's bid to join the European Union (EU) if the bloc continues to criticize Turkey's human rights record.
The threat came after the European Parliament published a report that called for a halt to accession talks.
The report was adopted on September 13, 2023. It expresses deep concern about the ongoing deterioration of the rule of law and human rights in Turkey, and calls for a number of measures to be taken by the EU and the country in question.
The report also calls for the EU to explore "a parallel and realistic framework" for its ties with Ankara, given the current circumstances. However, it does not specify what this framework might look like.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry has rejected the report's findings, but Erdogan's threat to "part ways" with the EU highlights the growing tensions between the two sides.
Turkey has been an official candidate to join the EU for 24 years, but accession talks have stalled in recent years over the bloc's concerns about human rights violations and respect for the rule of law.
