Former all-rounder Shahid Khan Afridi rallied on Tuesday behind Mohammad Hafeez, who served as the team director for Pakistan in Australia and New Zealand tours.
Addressing an event in Karachi, the ex-captain said: ‘’Hafeez had plenty of exposure in international cricket and should be given some time. If you believe Hafeez will do wonders in only one series, it is not possible.’’
Afridi acknowledged the potential of newcomer Saim Ayub, saying, ‘’Hopefully Saim Ayub will gain his form as he has talent.’’
He also talked about Fakhar Zaman and emphasised that both Zaman and Ayub should play as openers.
Afridi emphasised the need to appoint one skipper to avoid any ‘’conflicts’’ within the team.
Recalling the series against Australia and New Zealand, Afridi said: “Pakistan were not up to mark against Australia and New Zealand.
He stressed the need to focus on the players’ plans.
Highlighting the importance of uplifting youth in education and sports, Afridi said: “There will be a lot of difference if the youth are given the opportunity to uplift in education and sports.’’
‘’The academy that will be established will ensure to not only provide the facility to the youth in cricket, but I will also bring cricketers in to the academy who are facing economic hardships. I do not have the habit of making promises like politicians but like Afridis.''
