The United States has reiterated its close monitoring of Pakistan's electoral process, expressing concerns over infringements on freedom of expression, assembly, and association.
US State Department Spokesperson Vedant Patel during a regular press briefing stressed the importance of facilitating broad participation in the upcoming general elections, scheduled for February 8.
Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel underscored the US's commitment to ensuring that Pakistan's electoral process adheres to principles of freedom and democracy.
"We're continuing to monitor Pakistan's electoral process quite closely," stated Patel, highlighting the significance of a transparent and inclusive election mechanism.
The spox also expressed apprehensions regarding incidents of violence and restrictions on media freedom leading up to the elections. Patel particularly emphasized concerns regarding freedom of expression, including internet freedom, as well as peaceful assembly and association.
Such infringements, Patel noted, raise doubts about the integrity of the electoral process and undermine the fundamental rights of Pakistani citizens.
"Pakistanis deserve to exercise their fundamental right to choose their future leaders through free and fair elections without fear, violence, or intimidation," remarked Mr Patel.
