India captain Rohit Sharma expressed on Sunday immense satisfaction on Sunday after his team secured a comprehensive Test victory with young team over England.
The hosts secured their largest-ever Test win, defeating England by 434 runs in Rajkot on the fourth day of the match, taking a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.
Yashasvi Jaiswal played a pivotal role in the victory, scoring an unbeaten 214 and forming a substantial 172-run partnership with debutant Sarfaraz Khan, who contributed 68 not out.
This dominant performance set the stage for India's triumph.
Despite the absence of star batters Virat Kohli and KL Rahul due to personal reasons and injury, respectively, Rohit commended the young team for their resilience.
He acknowledged the challenges posed by the absence of experienced players but praised the newcomers for displaying character and making significant contributions.
Rohit stated, "Two debutants and not a lot of Test matches among the playing XI... it was not going to be an easy one for us to just come out here and win this series, especially with a lot of our frontline players missing."
He emphasised the satisfaction of winning a Test match under such circumstances, noting the impressive performances of the young players who seem to have found their place in the team.
Jaiswal, a 22-year-old left-handed batter, showcased exceptional form by scoring his second consecutive double century in the series, accumulating a total of 545 runs. Rohit praised Jaiswal's performance, stating, "He is playing well, it's good for us, and he is in good form."
Sarfaraz Khan, 26, impressed with his fearless batting, scoring 62 in the match. Rohit mentioned the absence of nervousness in the debutant and lauded his emotional yet focused approach on the field.
The skipper also acknowledged the return of senior spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on day four after he left the Test on day three to be with his ailing mother. Ashwin contributed with a wicket, and Rohit appreciated his commitment to the team, stating, "It shows the kind of person he is... wanting to put everything ahead for the team."
Rohit Sharma expressed his delight over the significant victory, giving credit to the young talents who stepped up in challenging circumstances, showcasing their potential to thrive at the international level.
