Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan has been sworn in as a judge of the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
The oath was administered by Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa at a ceremony held at the Supreme Court of Pakistan. Also present were distinguished members of the legal fraternity, including Supreme Court judges, the attorney general for Pakistan, senior lawyers, law officers, and officers of Law and Justice Commission of Pakistan.
Justice Afghan brings a wealth of legal experience to his new role, having previously served as the chief justice of the Balochistan High Court. His elevation to the Supreme Court marks a notable milestone in his judicial career.
The swearing-in ceremony was simple and dignified, as per a press release issued by the apex court.
The registrar of the Supreme Court conducted the proceedings of the oath-taking ceremony. Officers and staff of the apex court were also present on the occasion.
On March 8, outgoing president Arif Alvi had approved the appointment of three judges of the superior judiciary. Balochistan High Court (BHC) Chief Justice Naeem Akhtar Afghan was appointed to the Supreme Court under Article 175-A of the Constitution. Furthermore, senior-most judge Justice Muhammad Hashim Khan Kakar was also appointed as caretaker chief justice of the BHC in accordance with Article 196 of the Constitution.
Alvi had also appointed the senior-most judge of the Lahore High Court, Justice Malik Shehzad Ahmed Khan, as chief justice of the court under Article 175(A) of the Constitution. Justice Khan was appointed as former CJ Muhammad Ameer Bhatti retired on Thursday after reaching the age of superannuation.
