Organisers of the upcoming Berlin marathon have appealed to climate activists not to disrupt the race scheduled for this weekend, emphasising their readiness to handle any potential disruptions.
Juergen Lock, the managing director of SCC events, the organising body behind Sunday's marathon in Berlin, acknowledged the possibility of protests taking place along the race route. He expressed hope for a peaceful event but mentioned their preparedness for any contingencies. Lock stated that they were closely collaborating with law enforcement agencies to ensure the smooth progression of the race.
Lock conveyed his optimism for an enjoyable and serene sports weekend, urging demonstrators to refrain from interfering with the sporting events themselves.
The climate action group known as "The Last Generation," recognised for attention-grabbing actions in support of their climate agenda, had previously announced their intention to target the marathon.
In a statement, the group clarified their intent, stating, "There seems to be confusion: yes, we will interrupt the Berlin marathon. We cannot ignore the climate catastrophe."
"The Letzte Generation" activists, known for their unconventional tactics such as glueing themselves to roads to draw attention to the climate crisis, have generated mixed opinions within the public.
Notably, German prosecutors conducted raids on the homes of several activists in May, suspecting their involvement in "forming or supporting a criminal organisation."
Some activists have faced fines for disrupting traffic or obstructing law enforcement, while others have been subjected to legal penalties, including imprisonment.
Last week, members of "The Last Generation" protested by spray-painting Berlin's iconic Brandenburg Gate, which coincides with the marathon's finish line.
Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge, a renowned long-distance runner, will be among the elite athletes competing in Sunday's marathon. Kipchoge is aiming to make history by securing his fifth victory in the race, a feat that would distinguish him as the first athlete ever to achieve this milestone. He is currently sharing four victories with Ethiopian athlete Haile Gebrselassie.
