Kolkata Knight Riders spinner Varun Chakaravarthy emphasised the necessity for bowlers to adapt to the impact player rule in the Indian Premier League (IPL) instead of lamenting over factors beyond their control.
This rule, implemented last season, permits teams to substitute one player from the starting 11 at any point during the match. It's been instrumental in driving up scores this season as teams unleash their batsmen early in the innings, confident in the option to bring in additional firepower if needed.
Chakaravarthy reflected, "The impact player rule existed last year, but we didn't witness such high scores back then." He noted the evolving strategy among teams in utilising impact players more effectively this season, enabling them to approach their innings with aggression from the outset. Despite bowlers expressing grievances, Chakaravarthy stressed the inevitability of the situation, stating, "We must embrace the challenge. Ground dimensions and rules remain constant."
In their recent victory over the Delhi Capitals, Chakaravarthy claimed three crucial wickets, including those of Rishabh Pant, Tristan Stubbs, and impact player Kumar Kushagra, restricting Delhi to 153-9 in 20 overs. Phil Salt's explosive 68 off 33 balls propelled Kolkata to a comfortable victory with 21 balls to spare, further solidifying their position in the playoff race.
With six wins from nine games, the Kolkata Knight Riders currently hold the second spot in the standings and are poised to face the formidable Mumbai Indians on Friday.
