Jose Gomes aims to become the first Portuguese coach to win the CAF Confederation Cup as his Zamalek side hosts Moroccan team Renaissance Berkane in Cairo on Sunday. Berkane leads 2-1 on aggregate following a thrilling first leg, reminiscent of the 2019 final, where Zamalek triumphed on penalties after a 1-1 tie.
In the first leg, Berkane secured a two-goal lead by halftime through efforts from captain Issoufou Dayo and Adil Tahif. However, Zamalek's Tunisian striker Seifeddine Jaziri cut the deficit early in the second half, setting the stage for an intense return match at the 75,000-capacity Cairo International Stadium.
Gomes, who took over Zamalek in January, is determined to add to his solitary trophy—the 2016 Saudi Super Cup—earned during his coaching career across 16 clubs in Europe and the Middle East. He follows in the footsteps of compatriots Jesualdo Ferreira and Jaime Pacheco, who found success with Zamalek.
Despite Portuguese coaches' previous struggles in the Confederation Cup, Gomes is optimistic. "I can win trophies with Zamalek. Apart from great footballers, they have passionate supporters who create an incredible atmosphere," he stated.
Reflecting on the first leg, Gomes acknowledged his team's rocky start and emphasised the importance of avoiding set-piece opportunities for Berkane, a team known for its quick and skillful play.
Berkane's coach, Mouin Chaabani, who has led his team to seven major trophies, including consecutive CAF Champions League titles with Esperance, noted the critical importance of their first-leg victory. "We must change our strategy and rectify mistakes," he said, preparing for the challenging return match.
Zamalek's formidable home record in the Confederation Cup—16 wins and five draws from four appearances—boosts their confidence, despite recent home draws against Modern Future and Dreams of Ghana in the knockout stages. These away triumphs have kept their hopes alive for a 12th African title.
As the final approaches, all eyes are on Gomes and his potential to make history with Zamalek.
