The United States defeated Bangladesh by six runs to secure the second Twenty20 international and clinch the three-match series in Houston on Thursday.
This unexpected victory marks a significant achievement for the Americans, ranked 19th in the world, against the ninth-ranked Bangladesh.
Chasing a target of 145, Bangladesh seemed well-positioned at 78-2 but crumbled, losing their last eight wickets for just 60 runs. This collapse came just two days after their five-wicket loss in the series opener.
Fast bowler Ali Khan was instrumental in the USA’s victory, claiming 3-25. Despite notable performances from Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto (36) and former captain Shakib Al Hasan (30), the team managed only 138 runs.
The series served as preparation for the upcoming Twenty20 World Cup, set to begin on June 1 in the United States and the Caribbean.
Bangladesh's chase began disastrously when Soumya Sarkar was dismissed without scoring in the first over by Saurabh Netravalkar. Tanzid Hasan, who replaced veteran Liton Das, was bowled for 19 by Jasdeep Singh, leaving Bangladesh at 30-2 in the fifth over.
At 78-2, Bangladesh looked to be in control until a mix-up resulted in the run-out of Shanto. This sparked a dramatic collapse. Towhid Hridoy was bowled by Corey Anderson for 25, while veteran Mahmudullah and Jaker Ali both fell to Shadley van Schalkwyk.
Ali Khan then dismantled the remaining batting order, dismissing Shakib Al Hasan, Tanzim Hasan Sakib, and last man Rishad Hossain, sealing the match for the USA.
Earlier, US captain Monank Patel top-scored with 42 off 38 balls, supported by Steven Taylor (31) and Aaron Jones (35). For Bangladesh, Shoriful Islam, Mustafizur Rahman, and Rishad Hossain each took two wickets.
The final match of the series will be played in Houston on Saturday.
