France's record goalscorer Olivier Giroud has revealed plans to retire from international football after Euro 2024, as reported in Friday's edition of L'Equipe.
The World Cup-winning striker, who will turn 38 in September, expressed his desire to give the younger generation a chance on the national team.
Giroud, who has netted 57 goals in 131 appearances for France, broke Thierry Henry's record during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where France narrowly lost to Argentina in the final. First capped in 2011, Giroud's illustrious career includes a World Cup win in 2018, a Champions League victory with Chelsea in 2019, a Serie A title with AC Milan in 2022, and four FA Cups.
After Euro 2024, Giroud will join MLS side Los Angeles FC, asserting his intention to continue his club career while acknowledging the physical toll of international play. Reflecting on his decision, Giroud said, "It is time to leave the stage to the young," adding that winning the Euro would complete his illustrious trophy collection.
