Pakistan's veteran cricketer Rashid Latif has sparked a heated debate by suggesting that a senior player should take over wicketkeeping duties, currently held by Mohammad Rizwan.
Latif believes Rizwan's skills are being underutilized and that a seasoned player would better support the team's captain.
"The team has two wicketkeepers, Usman Khan and Rizwan. I suggest that wicketkeeping should be done by a senior player," Latif said on a local sports program. He emphasized the importance of a wicketkeeper as the captain's most valuable asset, citing their ability to observe the game and assist the skipper.
Latif's remarks come as Pakistan faces a disappointing 2-0 defeat in the T20I series against England, with the team struggling with communication and middle-order batting.
Former captain Shoaib Malik has also advised Babar Azam to play at number three instead of opening the innings, highlighting the need for a batsman who can rotate the strike in the middle order.
As Pakistan prepares for the T20 World Cup 2024, beginning on June 6 against the USA, the team's wicketkeeping and batting strategies are under scrutiny.
