Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to privatising electricity distribution companies as a priority to address critical challenges in the energy sector.
On Thursday, Prime Minister Sharif met with a delegation of foreign energy experts led by former Prime Minister of Georgia, Nika Gilauri. The discussions focused on comprehensive power sector reforms in Pakistan.
During the meeting, he emphasized that circular debt, line losses, and power theft are significant issues hindering the energy sector’s efficiency. He described energy reforms as crucial for economic development.
“We are working on a policy to reduce revolving debt through the privatization and outsourcing of electricity distribution companies, drawing on Georgia’s successful experience in this area,” Sharif stated.
The Prime Minister also underscored the government’s aim to discourage the use of expensive energy sources. Instead, there is a strong push towards promoting alternative energy, particularly solar energy.
Furthermore, Sharif highlighted the importance of public-private partnerships in the energy sector. He mentioned ongoing reforms designed to lower the per-unit cost of electricity, aiming to make energy more affordable for consumers.
