In the first semi-final clash at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, Pakistan emerged victorious with a 2-1 triumph over Hong Kong in the men's squash team event, securing a spot in the final.
The Green Shirts are now set to face the winner of the second semi-final, a battle between Malaysia and India, in the ultimate showdown.
Noor Zaman ignited Pakistan's journey to success by securing an early lead with a 3-1 victory over Leung Chi Hin Henry. However, Hong Kong made a strong comeback in the second match as Mohammad Asim engaged in a closely contested bout, ultimately losing 3-2 to Lau Tsz Kwan.
The fate of the final hung in the balance as the decider unfolded, but Nasir Iqbal sealed the deal with a dominant 3-0 win over Tang Ming Hong, propelling Pakistan into the championship round.
Reflecting on his performance, Asim, who fought valiantly in his match, expressed his excitement about securing a medal for the Men in Green and conveyed his determination to aim for gold in the upcoming final.
"It's an incredible feeling to reach the final; the match was absolutely fantastic. Unfortunately, I couldn't secure a victory in my contest, mainly because all my opponents were top-notch players," he remarked.
"Honestly, we didn't anticipate making it to the final because our team is relatively junior compared to our opponents, many of whom feature top 10 players. We've secured the silver now, and tomorrow, we're going all out to claim the gold. This is a team effort; we can't attribute success or failure to any single individual. We're up against formidable opponents, and the level of competition here is beyond imagination."
Noor Zaman, the player who kick-started Pakistan's journey with a strong win, echoed similar sentiments in a video message. He expressed surprise at their progression to the final and acknowledged the challenging nature of their opponents.
"We didn't expect to reach this far, especially considering Nasir and Asim, both of whom are seasoned players. Asim had some tough matches against top players and narrowly missed out. I, too, faced formidable opponents but managed to secure victories. Please keep us in your prayers for tomorrow," he concluded.
