In a move that has sent shockwaves through the medical community, the Punjab Health Department has significantly increased the entry test fee for postgraduate medical programs.
Aspiring doctors will now have to shell out a hefty Rs 10,000 to appear for the MS and MD entrance exams, a 66% hike from the previous fee of Rs 6,000.
The notification about the fee hike was issued following approval in the inter-university board meeting. According to the new guidelines, King Edward Medical University will administer the admission tests for various programs.
The substantial increase in fees comes at a time when inflation is already straining many families. Medical professionals have expressed their concerns, labeling the fee hike as "cruel" given the current economic challenges.
