Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday credited Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Asim Munir for playing a pivotal role in securing the International Monetary Fund (IMF) program, which has provided critical economic relief to Pakistan.
Speaking at a press conference in London, the Prime Minister lauded General Munir’s personal efforts, noting his diplomatic visits to allied countries, which helped pave the way for the IMF agreement.
“Pakistan’s economic situation is improving, and this progress wouldn’t have been possible without the involvement of General Asim Munir, who worked tirelessly to help us achieve the IMF deal,” Sharif said.
He also acknowledged the support of key allies, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and China, whose contributions were crucial in finalizing the financial package.
Sharif condemned the social media campaigns targeting Pakistan’s armed forces and martyrs, calling these actions “unacceptable and disgraceful.”
During his address, PM Shehbaz also touched on international issues, particularly the escalating violence in Gaza. Sharif strongly condemned the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the recent unrest in Lebanon, calling for an immediate ceasefire.
He reiterated the need for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state and emphasized the importance of giving Palestine representation in the United Nations.
The premier shared details of his recent meetings with global leaders. He met with Dr. Yunus of Bangladesh, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, where he conveyed the concerns of the Pakistani people on various global issues.
