Pakistan Test team captain Shan Masood has addressed a press conference in Karachi, focusing on team-building, player support, and the upcoming Test series against England.
He emphasized the importance of backing players through difficult phases to build a strong, future-ready squad.
“The team is working hard to ensure a positive result against England, especially after the disappointment against Bangladesh. We are aware of the challenges ahead, and we are determined to deliver memorable performances,” Shan said. He also noted that while the team is sorry for recent losses, they are moving forward with a positive mindset.
Shan acknowledged that the Pakistan team didn't achieve the desired results in the past year, including in the Bangladesh series. “We lost on critical occasions, but we accept responsibility and are preparing for better outcomes,” he remarked. He highlighted that Test cricket demands both mental and physical resilience, and there will be no compromise on fitness.
Commenting on the team’s preparations, he mentioned that the pitches in Rawalpindi and Multan will be closely examined to decide whether spinners or fast bowlers will play a key role in the matches. “We are taking steps to get off to a good start in the first Test and review conditions in Multan for the upcoming matches,” Shan said, adding that Khurram Shehzad and Aamir Jamal’s fitness would be evaluated before final selections.
Regarding wicketkeeping, Shan noted that Mohammad Rizwan remains the first-choice keeper, but if needed, Sarfraz Ahmed is ready. He also mentioned that Pakistan is working with 3-4 young wicketkeepers for the future. “Test cricket demands top fitness from wicketkeepers, and we’re preparing for the future in this aspect,” he added.
Shan expressed his confidence in Babar Azam, calling him one of the best batsmen in the world. “Babar is not out of form. He played a great innings in the Champions Cup,” he stated, urging the media and fans to give more time to the batters.
The captain also touched on the need to nurture young talent like Kamran Ghulam, ensuring they get adequate opportunities when introduced to the squad.
As the team prepares to face England in Multan, Shan said the weather and pitch conditions will be challenging, but the players are focused on putting up a strong fight. “We are backing our players and trying to play to our strengths,” Shan said, emphasizing that representing Pakistan as captain is both an honour and a responsibility.
Shan Masood concluded by addressing the pressure of captaincy, noting that results will determine the future. “Captaincy is not a charity, it’s a job. If we deliver good results, we will stay. If not, someone else will come,” he remarked.
