Federal Minister for Petroleum Dr Musadik Malik held a press conference on Monday to address concerns about gas pricing and explain the government’s initiatives aimed at easing economic challenges.
The minister revealed that discussions have been held with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to introduce uniform gas rates for industries across the country. He highlighted disparities in gas pricing, stating, “One factory is receiving cheap gas while another pays higher rates. This imbalance is unfair and must be addressed.”
In the first phase of this plan, the price of gas for industries has been increased from Rs3,000 to Rs3,500 per unit. Malik expressed optimism that uniform pricing would resolve issues faced by various sectors and boost industrial efficiency.
Fixed charges for domestic consumers
Dr Malik also elaborated on the controversial issue of fixed charges in gas bills for domestic consumers. “These fixed charges are collected year-round to provide consumers with discounts during the winter,” he explained, addressing concerns raised by citizens over high gas bills. He noted that committees often form in winter to deal with the financial burden of gas usage.
Prioritizing fertilizer sector
The fertilizer industry was also discussed, with the minister acknowledging pricing challenges. “We are giving importance to fertilizer factories and actively seeking solutions to their gas pricing problems,” he said.
Commitment to relief
Dr. Malik assured that gas prices have not been increased for domestic or commercial consumers, emphasizing the government’s focus on alleviating economic pressures. “Instead of benefiting a few companies, our policies have impacted millions positively,” he added.
He also claimed that the government’s measures have reduced inflation significantly. “The inflation rate for food items has dropped to 2%, and rural areas are experiencing a gradual decrease in the prices of goods. Our priority remains the prosperity and employment of our people,” the minister stated.
Highlighting the progress made under his ministry, Dr. Malik noted that the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) is on track to meet the targets set by the government. “We are focused on the country’s development and ensuring prosperity for all citizens,” he said.
