The government is working to reduce electricity prices across the country in a bid to provide relief to consumers.
According to sources in the Ministry of Energy, a task force has initiated negotiations with 45 additional power plants to lower electricity tariffs.
As part of the plan, the profit margin of around 25 state-owned power plants will be slashed from 19% to 13%, leading to a reduction of 50 paisa per unit in electricity rates. Furthermore, these power plants will now be compensated based on actual power generation rather than total production capacity.
With these measures, the overall electricity tariff is expected to decrease by Rs2 per unit. The recommendations of the task force are likely to be presented for approval in the next cabinet meeting.
