Clinical South Africa stormed to the Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final by beating England by seven wickets as the Jos Buttler’s era came to an end in the 11st match of the Champions Trophy 2025 at the Karachi stadium on Saturday.
Chasing a modest 180-run target, South Africa completed the run chase, with 125 balls to spare. Rassie van der Dussen’s scored an unbeaten 87-ball 72, laced with six boundaries and three towering sixes.
Heinrich Klassen also scored a fiery 56-ball 64, complemented with 11 boundaries.
David Miller smashed a six to seal the match for the Proteas.
For England, none of the bowlers looked challenging for the opposition, but Jofra Archer (2-55) picked up two wickets. Adil Rashid (1-37) took a scalp.
Earlier, Wiaan Mulder (3-25) and Marco Jansen (3-39) helped South Africa bundle out England for 179.
Opting to bat first, England were off to a horrendous start and started to face an early hiccup. The wicket of Phil Salt started the slide and it went downhill quickly thereafter.
Joe Root (37), Jofra Archer (25), Ben Duckett (24), Jos Buttler (21) showed some resistance with the bat.
Phil Salt (8), Jamie Smith (0), Harry Brook (19), Liam Livingstone (9), and Jamie Overton (11) failed to show significant resistance with the bat.
For South Africa, Wiaan Mulder (3-25) and Marco Jansen (3-39) bagged three wickets apiece.
Keshav Maharaj (2-35) took two wickets.
Lungi Ngidi (1-33) and Kagiso Rabada (1-42) took a scalp each.
