Catherine, Princess of Wales, was recently seen without her well-known engagement ring in a video shared on social media by the official account of the Prince and Princess of Wales.
The video, part of a campaign promoting the Scouts and highlighting the importance of nature and mental well-being, has drawn widespread attention due to the absence of the iconic sapphire ring once worn by Princess Diana.
Royal observers quickly noticed that the Princess, who usually wears the blue sapphire and diamond ring presented to her by Prince William upon their engagement, had chosen to forgo it in the video. The move has sparked a wave of speculation, with royal watchers and commentators weighing in on its potential significance.
Speaking to Hello! magazine, Ella Citron-Thompkins, a jewellery expert at Diamonds Factory, suggested that the decision may have been a conscious one tied to the overall theme of the campaign.
“The video focuses on the importance of nature, mental well-being, and emotional grounding,” she explained. “Her ring is a highly recognisable piece, so she may strategically want audiences to connect with the messaging rather than herself.”
Instead of her engagement ring, the Princess wore a more understated eternity ring stack—an accessory often associated with milestones and subtle elegance.
Citron-Thompkins further noted that Middleton’s ongoing health recovery may have influenced her styling choices. “Following her recent treatment, it's clear that much has shifted in her life. Health challenges often bring a deeper appreciation for comfort and symbolism, especially in the pieces we choose to wear,” she said.
The Princess of Wales has kept a low public profile in recent months due to undisclosed medical treatment, fuelling public concern and curiosity about her well-being.
Prince William proposed to Catherine in 2010—not 2012 as sometimes misreported—during a private holiday in Kenya. The engagement ring, originally belonging to his late mother Princess Diana, has since become one of the most iconic royal heirlooms in the world.
While Kensington Palace has not issued an official statement on the matter, royal analysts suggest the absence of the ring should not be seen as cause for concern, but rather as a personal and potentially symbolic choice aligned with the Princess’s current phase of life.
