In a key World Cup clash, Sri Lankan spinner Maheesh Theekshana believed that England underestimated his team.
Sri Lanka successfully bundled out England for 156 in just 34 overs, reaching their target with a whopping 146 balls to spare in Bengaluru.
England, the defending champions, suffered their fourth defeat in five matches, placing their World Cup future in jeopardy. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, kept their semi-final aspirations alive with this significant victory.
Theekshana shared his thoughts, stating, "I think they underestimated our team because we also lost three games and only won against the Netherlands. I think they underestimated us. That's why the result went our way because we backed our strength; we went with a simple plan, so that's why we won the game today."
Sri Lanka's confidence received a substantial boost as they notched their second win in the tournament, providing them with a happy victory. The team is now focused on performing well in the upcoming four matches and securing a spot in the semi-finals.
Fast bowler Lahiru Kumara was instrumental, claiming three wickets for 35 runs, while Pathum Nissanka (77) and Sadeera Samarawickrama (65) guided the team to an unbroken partnership of 137 runs.
The return of former captain Angelo Mathews, who replaced the injured Matheesha Pathirana, played a significant role in the must-win match. Matthews made an immediate impact, taking crucial wickets and contributing to the team's success.
Theekshana expressed his delight at having an experienced player like Mathews on the team, highlighting the valuable insights he brings to the table.
With their second win in five matches, Sri Lanka has risen to the fifth position in the 10-team table, rekindling their hopes of advancing in the tournament.
