Pakistan is hosting the 5th Asian Open Taekwondo Championship, showcasing its growing prominence in international sports.
Taekwondo, an Olympic sport recognized in 213 countries, holds a special place in Pakistan's sporting landscape.
With an eye on promoting the sport, Pakistan Taekwondo Federation registered with the World Taekwondo Federation in 1977.
Since then, it has been an active participant in various international events, including the Taekwondo National Games, South Asian Games, Asian Games, Islamic Games, and all martial arts competitions.
In the ongoing event, scheduled to take place in Islamabad from November 1st to 5th, 2023, Pakistan will play host to participants in the senior poomsae and kyorugi categories.
This event is expected to draw talent from 27 countries, including 26 provincial and regional teams.
Notably, the 5th Asian Open Taekwondo Championship will witness the participation of the "President Asian Taekwondo Union" for the first time in the history of taekwondo.
In the previous edition of the championship held in Lahore, Pakistan's team made the nation proud by securing three gold, three silver, and one bronze medal, securing the second position.
Egypt clinched the first position with six gold and two silver medals.
Pakistan's taekwondo journey reached a significant milestone in 2016 when it earned a bronze medal at the Olympic qualification round.
Furthermore, two Pakistani athletes received the prestigious Presidential Award for their outstanding performances in the sport.
