Bangladesh's captain, Shakib Al Hasan, suffered a finger injury that forced him to withdraw from the remainder of the World Cup.
This decision came on the heels of a controversial incident in cricket involving a "timed-out" dispute.
During a match, Shakib broke his left index finger while at the crease. This match was marked by Sri Lanka's Angelo Mathews becoming the first player in the 146-year history of international cricket to be declared "timed out" following an appeal by Shakib, which he refused to retract.
Despite the early injury, Shakib displayed remarkable resilience, continuing to bat with supportive taping and painkillers. However, an emergency X-ray conducted in Delhi after the game revealed a fracture in his finger. The estimated recovery time is three to four weeks, and Shakib was scheduled to return to Bangladesh to begin his rehabilitation.
Bangladesh, who were already eliminated from contention for a semi-final spot, will conclude their group stage campaign against Australia in Pune on Saturday. In a previous match, Shakib contributed 82 runs to Bangladesh's innings, resulting in a victory by three wickets. Nevertheless, he faced criticism from Angelo Mathews, who branded him as "disgraceful" and accused him of "stooping low" for making the appeal that led to his dismissal.
On the same day, Anamul Haque Bijoy, a player with 45 ODIs under his belt, was named as Shakib's replacement in the Bangladesh squad.
