Inter Miami paid tribute to Lionel Messi's eighth Ballon d'Or on Friday, but their friendly match against MLS rivals New York City FC concluded with a 2-1 defeat.
Despite the loss, the night was marked by celebrations, starting with Messi expressing gratitude to fans for their warm welcome in Florida.
In a nearly-filled DRV PNK stadium, fans, echoing "Messi! Messi!" in unison, joined the festivities, showcasing their admiration for the Argentine star. The defeat, though a minor setback in a match involving teams already out of the MLS championship race, did not overshadow the celebratory atmosphere.
Messi, who raised the Ballon d'Or trophy he received in Paris last month, thanked the people of Miami for their affection and hospitality towards him and his family during his time with Inter Miami.
"I want to thank all the people of Miami, not only those who are here but in the city in general, for the treatment I and my family have received during this time. They showed me a lot of affection; they made me feel at home," Messi expressed.
Despite Inter Miami's MLS season ending the previous month, the fans' enthusiasm remained high, reflecting Messi's impact on the club. The 36-year-old joined Inter Miami in July, leading them to the League Cup title in August. Although he couldn't guide the team to the MLS Cup playoffs due to a late-season leg injury, Messi's presence electrified the league, evident in increased jersey sales and ticket subscriptions.
During the match against NYCFC, fans continued to chant for Messi, but the team fell short, with NYCFC securing victory through goals from Talles Magno and Julian Fernandez.
Messi's recent Ballon d'Or acknowledged his outstanding performances at the previous year's World Cup in Qatar, where he led Argentina to victory. Looking ahead, Messi expressed confidence in Miami's prospects for the next season, anticipating a better performance in the Leagues Cup defence, along with participation in the US Open Cup and CONCACAF Champions Cup alongside their MLS campaign.
"I had no doubt that we were going to have a good time, that we were going to enjoy ourselves, and today I have even fewer doubts that next year is going to be much better," Messi stated.
