Netherlands' cricket coach Ryan Cook revealed on Saturday that coaches from other teams have approached him to explore the possibility of fitting the Dutch team into their cricket schedules, following their impressive show in the World Cup.
In the tournament's last league match, the Netherlands are set to face table-toppers India in Bengaluru on Sunday. The Dutch team, led by Scott Edwards and composed mostly of foreign-born players, caught attention early in the tournament by stunning high-flying South Africa and securing victories against Bangladesh. Despite their notable performances, they find themselves at the bottom of the 10-team table before their ninth and final league game.
Cook shared the positive response the Netherlands have received, stating, "I have actually had a few teams' coaches approach me and ask about our schedule and how potentially they could fit into their schedule, so that bodes well." He emphasised the desire to play against more teams, citing the team's demonstrated ability to compete effectively.
Cricket's status in the Netherlands have historically struggled to gain prominence compared to sports like football and tennis. However, the recent World Cup performances seem to be changing the narrative. Cook acknowledged the shifting mindset, stating, "It's reaching a greater audience now, and a lot more people are talking about it within the Netherlands."
Despite challenges and criticisms faced by the team, including a Dutch TV show making fun of the players, Cook highlighted the changing dynamics after their World Cup display.
The coach noted that many Dutch players balance day jobs with their cricket passion, emphasising that participating in T20 tournaments, including the Indian Premier League (IPL), would be an ideal scenario for them. Cook expressed the belief that the IPL, or any other league, would provide valuable experience for the players and elevate their game.
