Uncertainty hangs over the upcoming general elections, as the secretary of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), Omar Hamid Khan, has reportedly suddenly fallen seriously ill and offered to resign.
According to unconfirmed sources, while Hamid hasn't officially submitted a written resignation yet, an important meeting was held between him and Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja to discuss the situation. It is unclear whether Hamid's illness, said to be a lung infection, will affect his ability to oversee the crucial elections.
The sources say that during the meeting, Hamid excused from working owing to his illness. He is reported to have said that his illness might affect his performance, especially when elections were near.
Concerns are mounting that the elections could be hampered by Hamid's absence, considering his vital role in organizing and managing the polls. Sources claim that Hamid offered to step down to ensure no disruption, but the CEC reportedly advised him to prioritise his health and seek the best treatment until recovery.
'Secretary on leave'
Meanwhile, an ECP spokesman has issued a clarification regarding the commission’s secretary, saying Omar Hamid was an intelligent and hard-working officer, who was working in the commission efficiently.
Omar Hamid has been unwell for the last few days, and he has been on leave previously due to illness, the spokesman claimed.
An ECP statement further said that if his health permits, Omar Hamid will resume his duties soon, while the election commission is fully functional without any hindrance.

In the absence of the secretary, both the special secretary and the interpreter would be performing duties. “The election commission and its offices are working even during holidays,” the spokesperson said.
He added that ECP Secretary Omar Hamid was currently on leave due to an illness.
With elections drawing closer, this sudden development casts a shadow over the electoral process. Whether Hamid remains in his position or decides to step down, ensuring transparency and timely communication from the Election Commission is crucial to allay public concerns and maintain confidence in the democratic system.
It should be noted that Hamid has been made a party on behalf of the election commission in the PTI’s contempt of court case before the Supreme Court regarding the non-provision of a level playing field despite court orders.
The next hearing in the case is fixed for tomorrow.
