The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Monday rejected the delaying elections on Senate resolution and clarified that general elections will be held on February 8.
The top electoral body replied to a letter from the secretary of the Cabinet Division citing a Senate resolution to delay polls for some time.
The Election Commission completely rejected the position mentioned in the resolution of the Senate and announced elections have been held in winter in the past too.
ECP said the Senate resolution was discussed in the commission’s meeting and highlighted that the date of general elections was set on February 8 in consultation with President Arif Alvi.
The Election Commission issued instructions to the caretaker governments to restore law and order to improve security and provide a conducive environment for voters.
The ECP has made all necessary arrangements for the elections and said could also assure the Supreme Court for the election on February 8.
“In the past, general elections and municipal elections were held in winter. Considering the facts, it will not be appropriate to postpone the general elections,” ECP said.
