In a brazen attack, a group of unidentified militants in the wee hours on Monday launched a deadly assault on the Chaudhwan police station in Dera Ismail Khan, resulting in the tragic loss of 10 police lives and leaving 6 others injured.
The attackers employed sniper shots and engaged in indiscriminate firing, utilising multiple hand grenades during the assault.
Among the victims were 6 officers from the Elite police unit of Swabi, strategically deployed in the area due to multiple attacks in the previous year and to bolster local police during the upcoming General Elections.
Following the attack, the roads leading to South Waziristan tribal district, Tank, and Dera Ghazi Khan were immediately impeded. A large-scale search operation was initiated promptly to apprehend the fleeing militants responsible for the heinous act.
Security forces were actively engaged in the operation at the time of filing this report.
The police in Dera Ismail Khan reported that the exchange of gunfire between law enforcement and the terrorists persisted for two and a half hours.
Despite the valiant efforts of the police, the attackers managed to escape the scene. A thorough investigation is underway to identify and bring the perpetrators to justice.
