Islamabad Accountability Court Judge Muhammad Bashir has retired after a 12-year tenure that was marked by significant legal precedents. Judge Bashir, who was appointed to the trial court on March 13, 2012, leaves behind a legacy of judgements in high-profile cases.
During his tenure, Judge Bashir made headlines for convicting two former prime ministers, Nawaz Sharif and Imran Khan, cementing his reputation as a fearless arbiter of justice. He earned a reputation for being impartial and dedicated to combating corruption at the highest levels of government when he pronounced verdicts in the Avenfield and Al-Azizia references against former prime minister Nawaz Sharif as well as the Toshakhana case against former premier Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi.
Judge Bashir also sentenced Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and her husband, Capt (retd) Safdar, in separate proceedings.
Furthermore, Judge Bashir also presided over cases against other high-profile individuals, including President Asif Ali Zardari, and former prime ministers Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, and Yousuf Raza Gilani.
Recently, Judge Bashir had sought medical leave after delivering a judgement in the Toshakhana case against Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi, leading to his eventual retirement.
