In response to the ongoing dispute over the government’s withholding tax policies, the Karachi Wholesale Grocers Association has announced that the largest wholesale market in the country will remain closed on Saturday, August 31.
This strike comes as traders, importers, and exporters convened for an emergency meeting at Jodia Bazaar today to express their growing frustration with the tax measures.
The shutdown is expected to have a significant impact on the supply chain, as the closure coincides with the weekly holiday on Sunday, leading to a two-day disruption in the supply of goods across the country.
Rauf Ibrahim, a representative of the association, confirmed that all markets associated with wholesale grocers will observe the strike. He said that this action is a direct response to the withholding tax, which traders have long opposed, arguing that it is burdensome and detrimental to business.
The traders have also scheduled a press conference at Jodia Bazar on Saturday at 11:30 AM, where they will announce their next course of action. The outcome of this press conference is eagerly awaited, as it will determine the future strategy of the traders in their ongoing struggle against the tax policies.
