In response to the looming threat of a cyclone, the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has issued an alert, leading to the temporary suspension of vessel movements and port operations.
The decision was made as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of the port's infrastructure, vessels, and personnel.
A spokesperson for KPT confirmed that all departments and staff at Karachi Port have been instructed to remain on high alert. An advisory has been issued, emphasizing the importance of taking necessary safety precautions to avoid any untoward incidents during the cyclone threat.
The advisory also directed that all ships docked at the port be securely fastened to prevent any potential damage from the anticipated severe weather conditions.
The spokesperson further emphasized that these measures are being implemented to safeguard both port operations and the maritime community.
On the other hand, a powerful gust of wind led to the overturning of several containers at the South Asia Port Terminal (SAPT) in Karachi, commonly referred to as China Port.
The incident occurred due to the intensity of the wind, which caused the empty containers to lose stability and roll over.
Port sources confirmed that there were no casualties or significant damage to property as a result of the incident.
Fortunately, the containers were empty, which minimized the potential for harm. Despite the disruption caused by the strong winds, the operations at China Port continued without interruption, ensuring that the port’s activities remained unaffected.
The port authorities have taken note of the incident and are likely to implement additional safety measures to prevent such occurrences in the future, especially during adverse weather conditions.
