Residents of North Nazimabad and North Karachi have something to look forward to as the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) has initiated a major project to overhaul the area’s aging gas pipeline network.
The new project aims to replace the 45-year-old, deteriorated gas pipelines with a modern 400-kilometer-long network, promising improved gas pressure and reduced leakage.
The foundation stone for this significant infrastructure upgrade was laid by the Acting Managing Director of SSGC, Amin Rajput. The project is expected to be completed within the next 10 months, as confirmed by an SSGC spokesperson.
The old gas distribution network, which had been in use for over four decades, had become increasingly unreliable, leading to frequent leaks and a noticeable drop in gas pressure for local residents. The dilapidated condition of the pipes not only affected supply but also contributed to significant gas losses.
The new pipeline system is expected to address these issues comprehensively. According to the SSGC spokesperson, the rehabilitation of the network will not only improve gas pressure but also help reduce gas theft and leakage to less than 10%—a significant achievement after 20 years of inefficiency.
This project is a part of SSGC’s broader strategy to modernize its infrastructure across Karachi, ensuring a more reliable gas supply to customers. With the completion of this project, residents of North Nazimabad and North Karachi can expect a substantial improvement in their gas service, particularly during peak usage periods.
