Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA) is working on the restoration and preservation of Maharaja Ranjit Singh's Haveli in Gujranwala.
The project, which began in May 2024, is expected to be completed by November 2025. The historic haveli, known as the birthplace of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, is a prominent representation of Sikh architectural heritage.
Over 50 percent of the restoration work has been completed as structural stabilization (such as underpinning, masonry arch reinforcement, column restoration, and parapet wall reconstruction), roof restoration (wooden beam roofing and waterproofing), and floor rehabilitation. Additionally, electrical work, decorative surface rendering, plastering, pointing, and wooden work (including door, window, and lattice installations) are underway.
The process of removing encroachments is also progressing successfully.
Speaking on the importance of the project, WCLA Director of Conservation Najam-ul-Saqib stated:
"The preservation of Maharaja Ranjit Singh's Haveli is a crucial step in safeguarding our rich cultural and architectural heritage. Our team is dedicated to restoring this historical site while maintaining its original essence. Key milestones, including structural stabilization, surface restoration, and encroachment removal, have been significantly achieved."
WCLA Director General Kamran Lashari also emphasized the significance of the initiative, saying:
"The preservation of Maharaja Ranjit Singh's Haveli reflects our unwavering commitment to protecting Pakistan’s cultural and architectural heritage. This site holds immense historical importance, and our efforts focus on restoring its grandeur while ensuring its structural integrity and longevity. Future generations will have the opportunity to connect with and appreciate their rich history."
With the project progressing at a steady pace, the Walled City of Lahore Authority remains committed to completing the restoration, ensuring that this historic landmark stands as a testament to Pakistan's diverse cultural past.
