The Balochistan government has decided to merge the Levies Force with the provincial police in response to the rising wave of terrorism, particularly after the Jaffar Express attack in Bolan.
According to government sources, the increasing security threats in Balochistan have prompted discussions on reorganizing civil forces. A legislative framework is being considered to integrate the 26,000-strong Levies Force into the Balochistan Police to enhance security operations across the province.
The sources said the decision had been taken over the growing terrorism and security challenges in Balochistan. Currently, Balochistan's policing system is divided into two parts:
- Urban Areas (A Area): Under the jurisdiction of the Balochistan Police.
- Rural Areas (B Area): Controlled by the Levies Force.
Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfaraz Bugti, in a recent press conference alongside DG ISPR, hinted at abolishing the A and B Area distinction to create a unified security structure.
The debate over the effectiveness of the Levies Force has intensified following Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s visit to Quetta, where military officials also questioned its performance in tackling terrorism.
