A full court reference was held to honour retired Supreme Court judge Justice Sardar Tariq Masood, during which Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa highlighted the significant contributions of the jurist and expressed gratitude for his service to the judiciary.
CJP Isa underscored the pivotal role Justice Masood could have played as chief justice of the Lahore High Court, noting that the province suffered due to his absence from that position. However, he emphasized that the Supreme Court benefited immensely from Justice Masood's presence.
"Because of just one order of the Lahore High Court, the general elections could have been derailed again," the CJP emphasised, adding that the apex court ruled against it after holding proceedings around midnight.
Addressing concerns raised about Justice Masood's involvement in the military courts case, the CJP deemed them invalid, affirming Justice Masood's integrity and commitment to upholding the rule of law.
In his address, Justice Sardar Tariq Masood emphasized the importance of judicial independence, stating that it extends beyond mere separation from the administration. He underscored the necessity for judges to remain fearless in the face of powerful influences, cautioning against compromising judicial independence for the acceptance of influential circles.
The full court reference also featured speeches by Attorney General for Pakistan Mansoor Usman Awan, as well as the presidents of the Pakistan Bar Council and the Supreme Court Bar Association. They lauded Justice Masood's dedication and service to the judiciary, expressing appreciation for his invaluable contributions.
The event served as a testament to Justice Sardar Tariq Masood's exemplary career and unwavering commitment to the principles of justice and integrity. His legacy will continue to inspire generations of legal professionals as they uphold the rule of law and defend judicial independence in Pakistan.
